I just figured out that I never featured there this editorial I shot with paul graves last year. one brand + one color + one perfume + one high jewellery item. matching these restraints was quite a crazy work and I must confess that it ended up being one of the most stressful story I get to do. but I am so proud now that this story has been taken as inspiration in quite a few other editorials since.

when I first discovered cartier latest high jewellery collection early june last year, I was stroke by it’s fifties californian sensuality. latin, tropical, bold and feminine.

I became obsessed with this portrait of rita hayworth that I used as the main reference for the still life picture I had to style for please! magazine.

a very special project we carried on, aimed to redefine the concept of high jewellery display, diverting the traditional bust shape into a blank canvas for graphic patterns enhancing the jewellery design or colliding with it, resetting and adorning the rarest precious stones.

certainly the most exciting and challenging project I have worked on so far. making these seven necklaces available in paris for the shoot, making them travel from new york or london for the day, isn’t the least prowess of the process.

la biennale des antiquaires se profile, les rédactrices de joaillerie en parlent et en parlent. la biennale, c’est notre moment à nous. il va falloir être bon pour tout voir et pour tout avoir. «tu as déjà fait des rendez-vous? tu as vu des trucs?»

et bien ça y est, les trucs commencent à arriver. et ils sont beaux. il y a quelques jours cartier, toujours une longueur d’avance, dévoilait une poignée de pièces, de pierres et de dessins comme un teaser de la collection de 60 pièces uniques et d’objets précieux qui seront dévoilés le soir du vernissage.

au milieu de pierres d’exceptions qui sont la norme pour cartier à chaque biennale, un saphir taille émeraude de près de 60 carats en particulier, la pièce qui a retenue mon attention, c’est un collier de diamants au style totalement inédit dans l’histoire récente de la maison. si l’on met de côté le caratage certainement affolant, tout ça très très pur, je n’en doute pas, ce sont ces courbes, une certaine générosité, un féminité dans le très précieux à laquelle nous n’étions plus habitués. le signe d’un nouveau glamour pour cartier? le mot est lancé.

et ce collier cartier n’est justement pas sans rappeler une broche datée de 1948 de la collection privée de van cleef & arpels que j’ai photographiée récemment. je retrouve dans l’un, ce que j’ai aimé dans l’autre. proximité glamour? 1948? virage film noir pour cartier,  «à la cottillard» ? ce ne serait pas une mauvaise idée.

un autre signe peut-être que la joaillerie en général a fini par avoir la peau de la chimère, george a terrassé le dragon et l’héroïc fantasy est heureusement derrière nous. merci, alice, tu peux rentrer chez toi maintenant.
